[Ed was too focused on Scar. On following the other's movements to try and dodge that incoming hand, after seeing the destructive nature of his alchemy for some reason stopping at that process of breaking things down. Including his arm, Al's armor. Al on the other hand was incapacitated early enough into the fight to notice they weren't alone, just too preoccupied with what was happening with Scar and his older brother. Too worried on drawing attention to whoever it was that seemed to be keeping an eye on them for whatever reason in not wanting them to be another target for Scar or something.
Ed asks, begging Scar that whatever he wants to do with Ed, that he leave Alphonse out of this. That Al is spared. He's evidently emotional in the moment and not considering the potential on if anyone else tried to fix Al with the armor, given the blood seal and all to consider. He just doesn't want Al involved in this if at least one of them could survive. If one of them could keep looking for the Stone and get their body back, it has to be Al. He doesn't notice the subtle ways Katara helps out while trying to hide and not be seen the way Al does.
He freezes in hearing that gunshot announcing the arrival of the military. Can only really watch and try get out of the way as Armstrong fights the Ishvalan, as Hawkeye shoots at him and he flees. Hawkeye offers her jacket to Ed, and he is thoroughly punched and chastised by Al in the aftermath before they're taken for Ed to recover at hospital for a while. Amid quite a few visitors, especially Maes Hughes popping in avoiding work rather regularly in keeping an eye on the boys.
But it isn't long before he heads off in making his way to go to Resembool, getting sidetracked with Armstrong escorting them and meeting Marcoh along the way. He only stays in Resembool just long enough for Winry to replace his arm and then heads straight back to Central to find Marcoh's research. Which results in him spending a lot of time in one of the libraries, the hotel alongside his guards he's been assigned in keeping an eye on him, after getting the notes from Sheska. Which means he is far too distracted to really dwell on it when Al mentions someone had interfered and seemed to be trying to help them in the fight against Scar. They sneak out to Laboratory Five while their guards wait outside their room assuming they were sleeping or still researching.
Ed's decidedly not thrilled in figuring out what the story really is with the Stone. The way it was made. He wants answers. Explanation. Maybe there's another way, some alternative? So of course he sneaks in while Al waits outside. Not immediately realizing Al gets confronted by Barry the way he is with the Slicer Brothers. And in his first encountering Lust and Envy. And subsequently being beaten unconscious by Envy as his arm malfunctions and getting hauled out just as the laboratory blows up to again be escorted to hospital.]
